Case synopsis:

Osman Shidane, 20, died three days after being stabbed by a teenage drug dealer in Ruislip.

He had arranged to meet the 16 year-old boy in an alleyway off Victoria Road on the evening of 15 May 2018.

Witnesses saw Mr Shidane, from Ruislip, being chased out of the alley into the street and attacked at around 9pm.

He suffered three stab wounds to the neck, arm and thigh and collapsed near an Asda store in Victoria Road.

Mr Shidane was taken to hospital but died at 5.16pm on 18 May. A postmortem confirmed the cause of death was a stab wound to the neck just below the ear.

A 16 year-old boy from Hillingdon was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was charged with murder on 19 May.

He went on trial at the Old Bailey on 29 October 2018. He was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter on 12 November 2018. He was sentenced to six-and-a-half years imprisonment on 7 December.

The court heard phone records revealed the suspect was regularly selling cannabis and Mr Shidane was one of his customers.

There were no witnesses to the initial incident in the alleyway but the evidence suggested both went to the meeting armed with knives.

A knife linked to the victim was found in the street and the murder weapon has never been found.

Witnesses saw the 16 year-old put Mr Shidane in a headlock before striking him around the neck or chest area in Victoria Road.

He then ran off leaving the victim to call for help from members of the public in the street. He later called a cab to take him to Ruislip Lido and detectives believe he threw his knife into the lake.

The boy was arrested on 16 May after officers spotted him cycling near an address they were keeping under observation in The Fairway in Ruislip.

He tried to ride off and dispose of cannabis but was detained after a struggle. A search of the address recovered clothing and trainers stained with the victim's blood.

Judge Michael Grieve QC said he reduced the sentenced because of the teenager's past history of physical and emotional abuse, immaturity and lack of previous convictions for violence.

'This case is a tale of the unnecessary death of somebody who had everything to live for. He was much loved by his family and all his friends,' he added.

Detective Inspector Jamie Stevenson of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Osman Shidane was a young man who was pursued and viciously stabbed to death in the street. It was a needless killing and the devastating effects will be felt by his family forever.

"Those who witnessed this crime will also have to come to terms with the aftermath, but I would like to personally thank all those members of the public who came to Osman's aid that night and tried to save him.

"The fact that his killer was only aged 16 at the time he carried out this terrible act makes this crime seem even more awful. As a result of carrying knives a young man has lost his life."
