Case synopsis:

Ben Gardner, 30, was beaten to death in the street in an unprovoked attack on Halloween 2009.

He was punched to the floor and kicked in the head by three men in Throwley Way shortly after 3am.

Mr Gardner, an IT consultant, suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital on the evening of 1 November.

Daniel Ransom and Ross Collender, both 21, and Jordan Dixon, 18, were all convicted of murder at the Old Bailey on October 12, 2010.

They were all sentenced to the youth equivalent of life imprisonment with minimum terms before parole of 16 years for Ransom and Collender and 14 years for Dixon.

The court heard Mr Gardner encountered the suspects after leaving a fancy dress party with his girlfriend Allanna Devine.

One of the group snatched a pirate's hat and wig from Ms Devine's head outside a pizza shop in Carshalton Road.

When Mr Gardner asked for it back they kicked it around the road and spat on it before hurling abuse at his girlfriend. One of them then punched Miss Devine in the face.

A CCTV camera captured Collender punching Mr Gardner in the face before Dixon knocked him back down to the ground. The final kick was delivered by Ransom.

Jurors heard both Ransom and Collender were seen laughing as they left.

Judge Richard Hone QC said: "By your actions that night you have devastated the lives of Ben Gardner's family and those who were with him that night.

"His family's life sentence is immeasurably harder to bear than yours.

"You were all in it together. The looks of pleasure in the faces of Ross Collender and Daniel Ransom after the attack were eloquent of joint enterprise and mutual exultation in the really serious injury you intended to cause. It is really rather a disgusting picture."
