Case synopsis:

Colin Bolton, 28, was stabbed to death on a housing estate in Kingston, south London, on 10 June 2013.

Police were called to Thursley House in Kingsnympton Park at around at around 6.20pm. Colin was pronounced dead at the scene.

A postmortem revealed he died of stab wounds to the heart. Mr Bolton, an electrical testing engineer, lived at Downfield House, Sheephouse Way, New Malden.

The following morning police arrested a 44 year-old man on suspicion of murder. Andrew Nichols, 44 [05/12/68], of Fordham, Excelsior Close, Kingston, was charged with murder on 12 June.

He went on trial at the Old Bailey on 17 February 2014. The court heard Mr Bolton had recently started a relationship with Nichols' ex-partner Michelle Dooley.

Prosecutor Simon Mayo QC told the Old Bailey that Nichols blamed Mr Bolton for the breakdown of his 18 month relationship with Miss Dooley.

'It was the breakdown of that relationship which appears to have caused him upset and it was that upset turned to anger that he vented when he armed himself with a knife and launched a fatal assault.'

Nichols claimed that Mr Bolton had flaunted his affair and showed him a photograph of the couple kissing.

On 25 February the jury cleared Nichols of murder but convicted him of manslaughter. On 14 March 2014 he was jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

Judge Peter Rook QC said: ''I accept you may have lost self-control and the ability to restrain yourself, so overwhelmed were you by emotion that you couldn't resist the impulse to attack Colin Bolton with a knife there on the table.

'This was a brutal and vicious attack with a knife, with close friends near by.

'You went to the flat spoiling for a fight, and after the attack you fled the scene.

'You would have attacked him further and you showed no immediate remorse.'

Detective Sergeant Rory Wilkinson, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Colin Bolton had everything to live for. He had a loving family and friends, was a successful electrical engineer and had just started a new relationship.

"Unfortunately Colin Bolton's partner had previously been in a relationship with Andrew Nichols. Nichols was unwilling to accept the new situation and he killed Mr Bolton in a fit of rage and jealousy. He stabbed the 28-year-old six times before escaping to Portsmouth. We can only hope that today's conviction brings some solace to Mr Bolton's family."
