Case synopsis:

Luther Edwards, 31, was stabbed to death after a row at a boxing match on 29 July 2016.

He was ambushed as he left the event at York Hall on Old Ford Road in Bethnal Green at around 10.30pm.

Mr Edwards, from Clapham, collapsed after being chased to a petrol station forecourt at the junction with Cambridge Heath Road.

He was taken to hospital and was pronounced dead at around 11.40pm. A post-mortem found he died of a stab wound to the heart.

Four men were charged with murder on 9 November 2017: Jerome Osbourne, 33, (28/08/1984) of Somerset Avenue, Chessington; Marlon Thomas, 27, (16/11/1989) of Woodcote Place, SE27; Christopher O'Sullivan, 31, (31/10/1986) of Bishopsford Road, Morden; and Kurtis Thomas, 29, (11/04/1988) of no fixed address.

They went on trial at the Old Bailey on 9 May 2018. At the close of the prosecution case Kurtis Thomas and Christopher O'Sullivan were cleared of murder on the direction of the judge due to insufficient evidence.

On 20 June 2017 Osborne and Marlon Thomas were cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter. On 29 June 2018 Osbourne was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and Thomas was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

The court heard the victim and his attackers went to York Hall to watch a boxing match involving the same mutual friend.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said 'something must have been said by somebody to someone' which led to two separate standoffs between Mr Edwards and Marlon Thomas.

Mr Edwards's girlfriend, who was not at the event, had been in an on-off relationship with Thomas several years earlier, but the two men had not met before, jurors were told.

During the evening Mr Edwards had taken a photograph of Thomas on his phone and sent it to his girlfriend  with the message describing Thomas as 'a little boy' and adding 'Ur with man now' and several crying with laughter emojis.

The first confrontation broke out near the bar before Marlon Thomas was pulled away by his friends.

A second brawl broke out outside after the last fight finished. Osborne threw the first punch before Mr Edwards was stabbed twice in the heart. Mr Edwards was further attacked in the petrol station forecourt.

Case Officer DS Brett Hagen stated: “This investigation was a lengthy and challenging one, but ultimately justice has prevailed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team for their painstaking work in reviewing thousands of hours of CCTV footage, which led to the arrest, charge and conviction of the individuals who carried out this savage attack.”
