Case synopsis:

Ruby Love, 23, was strangled and dumped in the Grand Union Canal on Christmas Day 2011.

Her fully-clothed body was spotted by a dog walker at Bankside, Southall, at around 11.42am.

A postmortem gave the cause of death as compression of the neck caused by a ligature.

Ruby, a mother-of-three living at her mother's home in Harrow, northwest London, was born with the name Rubina Malik.

On December 29, her boyfriend Manzar Juma, 27 [16/03/84] of Hexham Gardens, Northolt, was charged with murder.

He went on trial at the Old Bailey on July 15, 2013. The prosecution case was that Juma had a history of domestic violence against his partner and was on bail after being arrested over an assault a few days earlier.

On Christmas Eve 2011 Juma collected Ruby from her mother's home and Ruby texted a friend to say they were back together again.

Neighbours later heard shouting coming from Juma's flat at Hexham Gardens between 1.30am and 1.45am. The prosecution claimed he strangled her with a ligature during a row at his home before driving with her body to the canal at around 5.40pm.

Juma was arrested on 27 December and claimed he last saw Ruby alive when he dropped her off in Southall on Christmas Day. Forensic evidence linked Ms Love's body to his car and CCTV cameras captured him driving to the Canal.

He admitted the killing but denied using a ligature. Juma claimed loss of control, suggesting that Ruby threatened him with a knife and criticised his dead parents. Juma also claimed diminished responsibility on the basis he was suffering from depression and a personality disorder.

On 5 August 2013 the jury convicted Juma of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 16 years before parole.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Duffield, Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC), said: "Today the truth finally caught up with Manzar Jama. Not only did he strangle Ruby and callously dump her body in a canal, he then wove a web of lies to try to avoid capture.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to Ruby Love's friends and family as they try to come to terms with their loss and I hope that today's conviction provides them with some small measure of solace."

Ruby's mother Precious Love said in a statement: 'Juma has ripped us apart as a family. I had a close maternal relationship with Ruby and I had the trauma of having to go and identify her body. Juma has ruined all our lives forever.'
