Case synopsis:

Badri Dabir, 69, was found beaten to death at her home in Barnet,  north London, on 5 October 2013.

Police forced entry to the address in Aitken Road shortly after 1.40am and arrested her 42 year-old son at the scene.

Ms Dabir was pronounced dead at 2.10am. A postmortem gave the cause of death as head and facial injuries.

The following day her son Mohammed Badvie, 42 [19/12/70], of Aitken Road, Barnet, was charged with murder.

On 23 July 2014 Badvie appeared at the Old Bailey to plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The court heard Badvie had a history of mental illness dating back to 2002 although he had received little treatment.

Prosecutor Edward Brown QC said: 'At the relevant time he was seen to be acting in a very erratic way.

'Evidence appears to demonstrate there was a degree of unprovoked and severe violence towards his mother.'

Mr Brown added: 'There were injuries to the defendant's hand which seem to indicate that is the manner in which he killed her.'

Badvie was detained indefinitely under sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act.
