Case synopsis:

Matthew Kitandwe, 18, was stabbed to death outside his home in Battersea on 21 June 2016.

He collapsed in the communal area of a block of flats in Wayford Street and police were called at around 4.16pm.

Matthew, a student at South Thames College who had played football for the Ugandan youth team, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5pm. The postmortem found the cause of death was stab injuries.

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of murder during the investigation but nobody has yet been charged.

A £10,000 reward is being offered by Crimestoppers for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

In June 2018 detectives renewed appeals for witnesses and information.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell of the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command who is leading the investigation, said: "Today marks the two year anniversary of the tragic death of Matthew Kitandwe whose life was taken way too soon.

“This was extremely traumatic for Mathew’s family, especially his mother who was waiting in the car outside the block of flats where Matthew was killed. She saw the suspects who killed her son follow him into the block and she was the first on the scene trying to save his life.

“No mother should ever have to hold her dying son in her hands.

"We’re renewing our appeal today in the hope that someone who knows what happened on that dreadful night will reach out to us and provide us with that crucial piece of evidence that will bring Matthew’s killers to justice. If that person is you, please contact the police directly, or call Crimestoppers. I can assure you that your information will be held in the strictest of confidence and we take every lead very seriously.”

Matthew's mother Rose said: "My son Matthew, you will be greatly missed. You were my best friend and the house feels empty without you. It is a traumatic time for all the family. You were much loved by everyone and have left a very big gap to fill. Please, please could anyone with any information contact the police, as we don’t want any other family to go through this."

Matthew's uncle James added: "Matthew was an excellent sportsman, who represented Wandsworth borough in athletics, Uganda U-17s in football and had recently been signed by Colliers Wood F.C. He was very popular, creating enduring friendships with everyone he came across and cared deeply for friends and family. He was funny with a mischievous sense of humour and, curious to know more about his family’s background and culture, went to Uganda for 18 months. He is so greatly missed."

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 020 8721 4054 or via 101. Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
