A 16 year-old boy has died after being stabbed on a bus in Highbury, north London.

Derek Boateng was attacked on a 393 bus near the junction of Highbury New Park and Holmcote Gardens at around 3.09pm on Tuesday 23 April.

He died in hospital the following day,  

It has been reported the victim, a former pupil of Highbury Grove School, was celebrating his 16th birthday.

A 15 year-old boy has been arrested.

Statement from the Met Police: 

A murder investigation has been launched following a stabbing in Highbury.

Police were called at about 15:09hrs on Tuesday 23 April to reports of a stabbing on a Route 393 bus. The bus was stopped at Highbury New Park with the junction of Holmcote Gardens, N5.

London Ambulance Service and the London's Air Ambulance also attended, and a 16-year-old boy was treated at the scene.

He was taken by London's Air Ambulance to an east London hospital where he died late on Wednesday 24 April. Next of kin are aware.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

An incident room has opened under Detective Chief Inspector Chris Jones of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

The victim has been named on Twitter as Derek Boateng.

Derek Boateng died a day after he was knifed on a single decker bus outside the gates of a school in north London in an apparent fight between rival gangs.

Today his sister, Gifty Boateng, 29, described her brother as a loving, talented boy who wanted to be an engineer.

She said Derek lived with his parents in Hackney and was on the way home by bus when he was attacked.

UPDATE at 6.35pm: Police confirm victim as Derek Boateng, 16, from Hackney.

Formal identification has taken place and the deceased is Derek Boateng - 16 yrs (23.04.97) from Hackney.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

He said "This was an appalling attack on a crowded bus as it stopped for school pupils outside Highbury Grove School. It is dreadful to think that Derek, who was celebrating his sixteenth birthday, has lost his life in this way. We continue to work alongside all those affected by Derek's death including the victim's family and the wider community. I would urge anyone with information to come forward and contact police."

+ A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at a north London police station.


Islington borough commander Gerry Campbell said:

"This dreadful tragedy has left a family grieving for a son, brother and friend after the fatal stabbing of 16 year old Derek Boateng on Tuesday afternoon. I wish to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to Derek's family. As a community we must and will stand together and be resolute in our determination to defeat those intent on carrying knives and causing serious harm in our communities.

I am working closely with DCI Chris Jones from the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command who is leading a diligent investigation. Our priority is to support Derek's family and the investigation to bring the person responsible for Derek's murder to justice.

We have increased our patrols in the area and are working with partners to reassure our local communities including our young people, of our commitment to keep them safe.

 UPDATE at 10pm: The 15 year-old suspect is charged with murder.

Detectives investigating the death of a teenage boy on a bus in Highbury have charged a youth arrested with his murder.

[A] A 15-year-old boy from Havering appears in custody at Highbury Corner Youth Court tomorrow, Friday 26 April accused of the murder of 16-year-old Derek Boateng in Highbury New Park N5 on Tuesday, 23 April.
