The killer of a 39-year-old masseuse became known to police soon after the murder – but was not caught until his DNA was matched to a single hair left on the victim’s ring at her flat in Baker Street, Marylebone, nearly 30 years later.
Vicky Amaning, 34, was struggling to cope with her deteriorating health and the impact of the Covid lockdown on top of caring for her two autistic sons when she set fire to her home in south London in March 2021. She detailed her plans in her diary but was classed as ‘low risk’ by her counsellor two days before her death. Vicky’s mother believes that ‘more should have been done’.
Police initially launched a murder investigation after a 52-year-old carpenter was punched to the ground outside his home in Lambeth, south London. The suspect was never charged and at an inquest five years later the coroner concluded the attacker acted in self defence.
