A postmortem was unable to determine a cause of death and the Metropolitan Police are treating the case as unexplained while further investigation is carried out. Detective Chief Inspector Vicky Tunstall, of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “It would appear that an altercation occurred between two males just along from the tube station. During that altercation, one of the males was punched and, sadly, died at the scene. I am appealing to those who own commercial or residential premises near to 243 Field End Road to make contact with us if you have CCTV cameras in your premises. Additionally, were you driving along this road at that time either in your own vehicle, a commercial vehicle or via public transport? We are particularly interested in tracing a small, red car which is believed to have passed the incident at the relevant time.”
  5. Leon Street, 48, was found stabbed in Neasden Lane North, near the junction with Hazelwood Court, Neasden, Brent, after police were called at around 9.30pm on 11 January. He died at the scene an a postmortem gave the cause of death as stab injuries to the chest. Mr Street, a father and step-grandfather, lived nearby with his fiancee and worked as a delivery driver. Detectives are linking the attack to two others stabbings by a lone suspect. The first took place ten minutes before the murder, on Neasden Lane near the junction with Press Road. A 47-year-old man was treated at hospital and discharged. The second stabbing took place Neasden Lane North near the bus stop at the junction with Press Road at around 9.50am on 17 January. 8. Anas Mezenner, a 17-year-old college student, was stabbed in West Green Road near the junction with Willow Walk, Ducketts Green, Haringey, at around 9.10pm on 19 January. He died in hospital at 4.25am on 20 January. One of his friends was also stabbed but survived. Four teenage boys were charged with murder. One boy aged 17 was convicted of murder on 25 August 2021 following a trial at the Old Bailey and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 18 years before parole. Two others aged 17 were convicted of manslaughter and jailed for 11 years and 10 years respectively. The youngest suspect, aged 14, was cleared of both murder and manslaughter. The court heard Anas and three friends had arranged to meet the suspects for “a little scrap” to settle a dispute over a stolen mobile phone. However when the suspects arrived in Willow Walk they were armed with at least three knives. The primary suspect stabbed Anas in the buttocks and the second victim in the back. Police later recovered two large knives from inside a Chrysler Voyager found parked in nearby Milton Road. The keys to the car and a Zombie knife was found at the home of one suspect. CCTV footage also captured the suspects in the area before and after the attack. Analysis of the primary suspect’s mobile phone revealed messages describing the attack. During the trial he claimed he was acting in self defence but the prosecution produced evidence of a phone call from prison in which he said: “Just wanted my first little chinging you get it, my first little juice on my blade.” The judge described all three youths as having “a longstanding fixation with lethal knives”. DI Louise Caveen said: “While we have not been able to establish exactly why Anas was attacked, we believe the confrontation took place as a result of an incident, some years before, where one of Anas’s group had had their phone taken. Whilst Anas and his friends may have anticipated a confrontation, they did not attend the location armed with knives with the intent of using lethal force as the suspects did.”
  9. Tiparat Argatu, a 43-year-old Thai national, was found with head and neck injuries, including stab wounds, at a home in Hadfield House, Ellen Street, Whitechapel, at around 8.17pm on 24 January. He just wanted to have a good life and to take care of his family. Everyone who knows him will remember him as a legend. We are all absolutely traumatised. We don’t know how we are going to go on. It is just too painful. Long Live Lavz.” Tyreece Riggon, 20 (29/09/2000), of Armistice Gardens, SE25, Julian Russell, 22 (18/09/1998), of Sanfield Road, CR7, Tyreece Wolfries-Parkin, 18 (06.10.2002) of Rothesay Road, SE25, and Alex Pasley, 25 (01.10.1995) of Paxton Grove, Coulsdon, were charged with murder.
  12. Sven Badzak, 22, was chased and stabbed in Willesden Lane, Kilburn, at around 5.40pm on 6 February. He was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. A 16-year-old boy was also injured. Police said that Sven and his friend were “the victims of an unprovoked assault by a group of males.” Sven was stabbed after falling to the ground while his friend managed to seek sanctuary in a shop. Rashid Gedel, 20 [29.09.00], of Fenman Gardens, Ilford, Shiroh Ambersley, 20 (18.06.00) of Matthews Close, Wembley, and a 16-year-old boy were charged with murder.

Dwayne Stewart-Akers, 37 (16.05.83), of Highgate Road, was convicted of murder on 15 October 2021 following a trial at Harrow Crown Court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years before parole. The court heard Jack Ampadu was friends with Stewart-Akers and had gone to visit him on the evening of the murder. Following an argument, Stewart-Akers followed Jack out of the flat on to the landing and stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife. When police arrived Stewart-Akers told officers that Ampadu was still fighting on the landing. He then attempted to run off but was stopped and arrested. The attack itself was captured on CCTV cameras. DCI Claire Hine, the lead investigator, said: “This was a violent and unprovoked assault on a man who was – up until that moment – friends with the defendant. The ferocity of the attack was clear to see and left Jack Ampadu with a number of injuries which proved fatal. Shortly after the murder, Stewart-Akers pretended to be a victim but his ruse was identified and he was arrested by quick thinking officers.”

Were you in the vicinity of Jarrow Road from 6.30pm that evening? Did you see anyone acting suspiciously? If you were driving in the local area and have dash cam footage, please check it to see if you captured something that might help our investigation.” David Adeyanju, 18 (04.03.03), of Golders Green, and five boys aged 15, 15, 15, 16 and 17 were charged with murder.
  16. Drekwon Patterson, 16, was found stabbed in Preston Road near the station at around 11.30pm on 18 February. He died in hospital at 9am the next morning. Police are appealing for information about a black Ford Mondeo reg YR54 NHN which was seen on CCTV driving away from the scene and found burnt out in Silver Jubilee Park in Kingsbury on 19 February. DCI Richard Leonard said “I believe this car was used in an initial attempt to injure Drekwon in a collision on Preston Road. After the Mondeo had been driven at him, Drekwon ran away and was chased by four suspects who had got out of the car, before being caught and fatally stabbed. We have to yet to establish who was using this Mondeo in the days leading up to the murder, and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen it to get in touch.”
  17. Tyreke Watson, 21, was stabbed in West Green Road, Tottenham, at around 2pm on 22 February. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Momodu Samura, 21, (20/03/99) of Stanley Road, Tottenham, was charged with murder.

  19. Ahmed Beker, 19, was stabbed in Paddington Green, Paddington, at around 9.13pm on 26 February. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10pm. Ahmed’s cousin Josiph Beker was stabbed to death in Edgware in 2019. Police appealed for information about two mopeds which were seen driving erratically against the traffic towards Harrow Road from Paddington Green at around the time of the incident. One of the mopeds drove on the pavement. On 1 March officers recovered a moped from the Grand Union Canal near to Great Western Studios, Alfred Road. Jaden Forde, 18 (06.12.02), of Williams Way, Wembley, and Omar Ahmed, 18 (16.03.02) of Warlock Road, W9, were charged with murder.
  20. Tai Jordan O’Donnell, 19, was found with stab injuries in Alpha Road, Croydon, at around 12.12pm on 3 March. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.17pm. Kamila Ahmad, 22 (10.08.98), of Robinhood Lane, Mitcham, was charged with murder.
  21. Sarah Everard, 33, was kidnapped while walking home between Clapham and Brixton at around 9.30pm on 3 March. The last sighting of her on CCTV was in Poynders Road. On 9 March Wayne Couzens, 48 (20.12.72), a serving Metropolitan Police officer in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, was arrested. Sarah’s body was discovered in an area of woodland in Ashford, Kent on the evening of 10 March. A postmortem later found she had died from compression of the neck. Couzens was charged with murder and kidnap on 12 March. He pleaded guilty to rape and kidnap on 8 June and murder on 9 July. Couzens was sentenced to a whole life order at the Old Bailey on 30 September, meaning he will never be released on parole. The court heard Couzens used his position as a police officer to stop Sarah in the street, handcuff her and coerce her to get in his hire car, most likely on the pretext she had breached the Covid restrictions on movement. CCTV footage showed him standing with her next to the hire car at 9.30pm. He then drove her to Dover to transfer her to his own car before raping and strangling her to death, most likely in the remote Sibertswold area of Kent at some point before 2.34am on 4 March. He later disposed of her phone and set fire to her body using petrol he bought in the early hours of 5 March before dumping her remains in a pond in Hoads Wood. The prosecution said there was evidence Couzens had spent at least a month researching and planning the attack, including travelling to London on several prior occasions, purchasing a handcuff key on Amazon, carpet protector, hair bands and hiring the car on 28 February. Following his arrest Couzens gave a false account, claiming Sarah had been taken by a Balkan people-trafficking gang. The judge, Mr Justice Fulford, explained a whole life sentence was justified because Couzens had “eroded the confidence that the public are entitled to have in the police forces of England and Wales”. Sarah’s family said in a statement: “Nothing can make things better, nothing can bring Sarah back, but knowing he will be imprisoned forever brings some relief. Sarah lost her life needlessly and cruelly and all the years of life she had yet to enjoy were stolen from her. Wayne Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death. The world is a safer place with him imprisoned. It is almost seven months since Sarah died and the pain of losing her is overwhelming. We miss her all the time. She was a beautiful young woman in looks and character and our lives are the poorer without her. We remember all the lovely things about Sarah – her compassion and kindness, her intelligence, her strong social conscience. But we especially like to remember her laughing and dancing and enjoying life. We hold her safe in our hearts.”

They were named online as Victoria Amaning, 34, Ezra Okobia, 14 and Joseph Okobia, aged five. Police said that they believed the fire was started deliberately inside the address, and ruled out the involvement of a third party. Two men who were injured in the same incident left the scene before police arrived and later attended hospital. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder. One of them, aged in his 30s, assaulted police and NHS staff before forcing his way out of hospital but was arrested the following day following a search. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Vandenbergh, who is leading the investigation, said: “We believe this incident was witnessed by a number of people. They had gathered for a small vigil in remembrance of another recent fatal stabbing victim when an altercation began. Some of those people have already spoken to police, but I believe there are others who captured images and video of what happened. I need those people to contact us immediately. The information they have could prove vital in establishing the chain of events that has led to a young man losing his life.”
  30. Constanta Bunea, 50, was found stabbed in the back with a pair of scissors inside a block of flats in Ravine Grove, Plumstead, after police were called at 2.18am on 4 April. She died around an hour later. A postmortem confirmed the cause of death was a stab wound. Her partner Vasile Bratu, 39 (14.08.81), of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. Bratu was found guilty of murder on 21 October 2021 following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years before parole. The court heard Constanta began a relationship with Bratu in August 2019 when she moved to the UK from Romania. Her family became suspicious that Bratu was violent, controlling and manipulating. When they asked about her injuries during video calls, Bratu would intervene and ask if they were accusing him of hurting her. During the trial Bratu claimed that she had fallen on the scissors. DCI Kate Kieran said: “Vasile Bratu is a violent and controlling man. Constanta came to the UK in order to provide a better life for her family back in Romania, but soon after meeting Bratu it appears she became overwhelmed by his manipulative behaviour. This behaviour then led to violence which tragically ended in Constanta’s murder.”

Abubakar, also known as Junior, was the brother of Ahmed Jah, who was stabbed to death at the age of 21 in nearby Freemasons Road in April 2017. Police said Junior was approached by someone in a Land Rover Discovery and shot with a shotgun before being stabbed. The car was later found burnt out at Routemaster Close, Plaistow. It had been stolen on 21 April with a registration plate starting BX18 but at the time of the murder had the false plates false plates reading YH18 XLD. DCI Mark Wrigley said: “We believe those who brutally murdered Junior travelled to the location in this vehicle and then shot him from inside of it before stabbing him and driving away. It is crucial we hear from anyone who has any information.” Seven people have been arrested but nobody has been charged.

  1. Unfortunately we don’t have the time and resources to cover other cities in the UK. However, if you are interested in a particular city, you could draw up a rough list based on murder investigations publicised by the relevant police force on their website.

  2. This act of violence really has to stopped one way or another.. people are losing loved ones daily .. government really has to toughen up on this now… tougher policing..

  3. Londoners should wear medieval suits of armour. However, victims would drown if they were thrown into the river.

  4. Overall, the murder rate is pretty flat. But the fact that 1/3 of victims (so far) were teenagers I find remarkable (in the worst possible sense). I can’t think of any other city (of which good data is available) that has such a higher ratio. It’s a real failure of London this.
Can only hope the second half of the year is better + something is actually implemented to make sure this frequency is never, ever repeated.

  5. Any murder is one too many . Crime is in the top four of Londoners’ concerns . It is terrible that murders continue when Covid has killed more than 15,000 Londoners , including so many front-line workers .
